The title of this stamp issue, Ngana Nyitting, translates as “My Dreaming” in the Yamatji (Ngana) and Nyungar (Nyitting) languages.
Whadjuk Boodja (Country) is located in the Nyungar Country of Boorloo (Perth). This stamp shows parts of Whadjuk Country. Whadjuk is one of the 14 Nyungar tribes of south-west Western Australia. The Karak (black cockatoo) can be seen when rain is coming, and the Balga (grass tree) is plentiful around Whadjuk Country.
The Balga stump is good for lighting fires; the resin is very flammable and can also be used to hold objects together like tools and weapons. The Nollamarra or Kurulbrang is the kangaroo paw, used as a medicine. The hills are the Kaart-Morda (Darling Range), said to be the body of the Waagyl (the Rainbow Serpent). After she created the land, she lay dormant and resting in the Dreamtime.
The coin’s reverse presents an illustration of Karak (black cockatoo), Kurulbrang (kangaroo paw), Balga (grass tree) and the Kaart-Morda (Darling Range). As well as the artist’s initials and the year date, the reverse also incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
